L.A. Designer: Valerj Pobega, “Kabaret 1939″

Valerj Pobega refused to color inside the lines, while growing up in Italy, surrounded by her artistic family.  Today, with her latest fashion/art installation, “Kabaret 1939”, she still refuses to do so…
Her provocative installation at the ACE Gallery expertly blended beauty and grace with the burlesque…All the clothing featured in her eponymous couture collection are hand-made.  Every piece, on a model or live mannequin, is a piece of art, featuring hand painting and dyeing.
The attention to detail was apparent in every little element of the installation: from lighting and music, …

Art For the People: Latino Market Painted Ads

If you drive around L.A., you’ll see some older Latino Markets and restaurants featuring brightly painted murals that advertise their products or food.  Some of the murals are very simplistic paintings depicting merchandise, while others are detailed scenery that includes fishermen or the countryside.  Once in a while, the Virgin of Guadeloupe also makes an appearance in the ad, in very unlikely associations…
The complete absence of relative scale and lack of proportion between the painted objects brings a surrealist charm to these paintings: an apple is as big as a pineapple, …
